What is homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a medical philosophy and practice based on the idea that the body can heal itself. Initially founded in the 1700’s and now widely practiced across Europe. Homeopath medicines view the symptoms of an illness as normal bodily responses as it attempts to regain health.

Based on the idea that like cures like, i.e. if a substance causes a symptom in a healthy person, giving the person a very small amount of the same substance may cure the illness by enhancing the body’s normal healing processes. A homeopathic health practitioner uses liquid mixtures or pills containing an ingredient (usually a plant or mineral) for treatment of disease, these are known as highly diluted or “potentiated” substances.

In the UK homeopathy is widely accepted, with a recent report suggesting that as many as 1 in 8 use it every year and indicating that it is one of the UK’s fastest growing sectors expanding at 20% a year. In fact, the UK now has over 3000 registered practitioners and 400 doctor homeopaths. So maybe there is something to homeopathy after all, and maybe one day soon there will be more people in the UK willing to try something new.

Now I’d have never have guessed that Roger Daltrey, lead singer of The Who, would be someone who might use Homeopathy but apparently he thanks homeopathy for saving his son’s life, when he was 9 months old and developed gastrointestinal issues. He stated, “I’d heard of homeopathy, so I found a local guy in the Yellow Pages, and took my boy there. He gave him some powders. Within two weeks he was putting weight on, keeping the food down. The trouble recurred periodically for a couple of years, but he’s now 27, a fit and healthy young man. ^{Source article}

For another example, when David Beckham broke his foot before the 2002 World Cup, he told the world of the impressive results of treatment that he got from homeopathy.
